the ramblings of a former music nerd.

all throughout my life, music has been my one true love. my one fallback, when nothing else could make me smile, or cry, or make me feel alive. music was it for me, my favourite drug.
and now that i actually am madly in love (with a real live human!), my love for music has fallen by the wayside. i think this year i’ve been to only seven gigs. six of those were in january, and two of them were repeat viewings. i bought tickets to two more, but didn’t attend cause work was killing me. that’s woeful, in comparison to my gig history. my personal best effort was seven gigs in 12 days, but that was back when i was young and full of energy.
thanks to this handy little last.fm tool i’ve created a word map of my top artists.
so, in summary: got any recommendations for me?

June 30th, 2008 at 1:13 amIt hard work being a music nerd. If you don’t count tiny shows when friends are playing, I haven’t been to a show since the New Pornographers in 2006. Life gets in the way and there have been better ways to spend my time and money. That and I think that there just hasn’t been anything out there that has really inspired me of late.
But, have you heard the new Brendan Canning solo album? It’s pretty damn good.

July 2nd, 2008 at 11:26 pmMy love of music has only grown more intense with the passage of time. The reality of work, etc. taking their bigger share of the pie and disposable time shrinking has only restrengthened my need to cram as much music into my life as possible and keep on top of new things.
I’m pretty sure I’m gonna be that 55-year-old guy that still goes to shows. Lucky there isn’t too much a stigma associated with being that one guy - unless things change radically by then.

July 7th, 2008 at 10:40 pmthat’s awesome, stevo. i always look at those “older” people at shows with a mix of awe and confusion - i remember seeing some 60 year old couple at seafood at the annandale about 5 years ago and being so impressed.
